Assistant Public Defender (part-time)
The Peoria County Public Defender is hiring a part-time assistant public defender to represent clients in the traffic division. The Peoria County Public Defender’s Office is comprised largely of contract-based assistant public defenders which allows candidates to pursue individual private practice while assisting low-income clients in Peoria County. Job duties include consulting with clients before, during and after courtroom proceedings, reviewing discovery, preparing and arguing motions, negotiating with prosecutors, and preparing for and trying misdemeanor and felony level cases, including charges of driving under the influence, at bench or jury trials.

The ideal candidate will have experience in dealing with a fast-paced work environment and dealing with clients of varying backgrounds. Candidates must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with clients, prosecutors, judges, probation officers and other court personnel. Candidates must possess a thorough and accurate knowledge of basic legal principles, evidentiary issues and the code of criminal procedure.

Candidates must be graduates of an accredited school of law with a Juris Doctorate and must be currently licensed to practice law in the state of Illinois, or awaiting Bar Exam results. Salary commensurate with experience.
